ECE and STRABAG Real Estate lay foundation stone for hotel building in MesseCity Cologne

Construction starts on West 4, the fourth building in MesseCity Cologne

Building work on the large-scale project is progressing on schedule

Moving in is on the cards for Hotel tenants Adina and Motel One in 2020

Hamburg/Cologne,     21.9.2018 Today in front of a large number of guests, project partners ECE and STRABAG Real Estate (SRE) laid the foundation stone for the “West 4” hotel ensemble as part of the large-scale MesseCity Cologne project. The building is leased to the Motel One Group and Adina Apartment Hotels. The symbolic laying of the first stone was attended by city leaders and project managers as well as future tenants, among them: Henriette Reker, Mayoress of Cologne; Rainer M. Schäfer, Managing Director SRE; Matthias Niemeyer, Head of Development Europe Adina Germany Holding GmbH & Co. KG; Philippe Weyland, Managing Director Motel One GmbH and Torsten Kuttig, Director Development ECE Project Management.

Excellent hotel location

The hotel building, whose prestigious façade was designed by architects Gerkan, Marg and Partners, will provide a total of 308 rooms in addition to 171 studios and apartments. The seven-storey property is being built in the centre of MesseCity Cologne, directly adjacent to the ‘Messebalkon’, a plaza leading up to the exhibition centre itself. This new, spacious stairway system will create direct access between the ICE train station and the entrance to the exhibition centre. The location also benefits from excellent transport links and its immediate proximity to koelnmesse, Cologne’s exhibition centre.

Ed. Züblin AG is the general contractor for turnkey implementation of the building. It started work in May 2018. Soil excavation is now complete and the basement levels have been under construction since August, with March 2019 as the start date for above-ground construction. Handover to the hotel operators is planned as of August 2020.

‘Wrong side’ becomes ‘right side’

“Until now, Deutz, on the right-hand side of the Rhine, was on the ‘wrong side’ of Cologne. With our extensive development, we’re finally contributing to making this the ‘right side’. Along with the urban design and architecture, it’s our tenants above all who are breathing life into the new MesseCity business quarter,” says Rainer Maria Schäfer, Managing Director SRE, thanking all those involved in the project.

Torsten Kuttig, CEO MesseCity is very pleased with the overall progress of the large-scale project. He says, “Implementation of the hotel building means that we will complete the first construction phase of the new city district within our ambitious timescale. With its architectural and urbanistic quality, the district will continue to grow and considerably enrich Cologne’s metropolitan image in this prominent location next to Cologne’s exhibition centre.”

Matthias Niemeyer, Head of Development Europe Adina Germany Holding GmbH & Co. KG, says, “We are pleased to be opening up another top location for Adina here in Cologne. The first Adina hotel in North Rhine Westphalia and the tenth in Germany is another milestone in our European growth. We are sure that, as a premium brand in the apart-hotels sector with the extensive offering of a full-service hotel, we can offer trade fair visitors, city travellers and even families with children attractive accommodation in which they will be able to work, live and, above all, feel comfortable.”

Marketing for MesseCity Cologne East launched

In MesseCity Cologne, ECE and SRE are realizing a vibrant business district located directly between the southern entrance to the exhibition centre and the ICE train station of Cologne-Deutz. By 2023, a gross floor space covering 135,000 m2 in total will be created on the approximately 5.4 hectare site. The space is spread over six buildings, representing a mixture of offices, hotels, restaurants, small retail businesses and leisure facilities.

The building shell for the first three office properties, West 1-3, was completed recently. The aim is to complete the buildings, which will largely be occupied by insurance company Zurich Versicherung, by 2019. As progress with implementation continues apace, project partners ECE and SRE have now started marketing and approaching users regarding the real estate on offer in the second construction phase (East 1 and East 2 plots). In the eastern part of MesseCity, there are plans for another 60-metre-high office tower and a mixed-use office and hotel complex with some 18,500 m² and 26,000 m² rental space respectively. Extensive information about the entire project and the space available can be found at www.messecity-koeln.de.

Colourful cranes artistically lit

Four huge cranes on the MesseCity plot have become a special focal point. Artistically highlighted with coloured lights, they create a dramatic mood on the site, especially now in the darker season. In August, the West 1-3 plot of MesseCity was part of the spectacular overall light art project “Light it up!”, which the City of Cologne had initiated on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the computer and video games fair “Gamescom”. For this, Hamburg-based theatre producer and light artist Michael Batz had illuminated the entire area from the Deutz bridge to the Zoo bridge on both sides of the Rhine in colour, including four cranes on the MesseCity site which continue to exude a colourful glow even after Gamescom.
